With elevations ranging from 2,400’ at San Carlos Lake to 10,720’ on Mt. Graham, habitats include everything from Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts to spruce-fur forests. Miles of rivers and streams plus numerous lakes and ponds provide excellent riparian habitat. Less than 100 miles north of the international border with Sonora, Mexico, the area attracts many Neotropical migratory birds from Central and South America.

At Eastern Arizona College Ardent avocational archaeologists Jack and Vera Mills conducted extensive excavations on archaeological sites in Southeast Arizona from the 1940s through the 1970s. The Mills Collection, containing artifacts from several periods, particularly the Salado Period (1250 A.D. to 1450 A.D.) is an extensive display of the culture and lifestyle of the people who inhabited this region long ago. Hohokum, Mogollon, Kayenta, and Salado cultures are all represented in these extensive assemblages.

Composed of 2,000 acres of rolling sand dunes, the Hot Well Dunes Area is a haven for off-highway-vehicle (OHV) lovers. The area is designated “open” to vehicles including sand rails, ATVs, motorbikes and four wheel-drive trucks. In addition, the area is also equipped with natural hot springs tubs, perfect for those seeking some rest and relaxation.

Accessible just 45 miles southwest of Safford, the Aravaipa Canyon is perfect for the outdoor lover. The canyon is comprised of rugged terrain that challenges hikers of all levels. Aravaipa Creek is stocked with a number of native fish species. Wildlife is abundant here, with many visiting for the outstanding bird watching opportunities. The area has seen more than 200 bird species. Camping is also permitted throughout the wilderness area.

Experience one of the state’s most prominent industries at the Morenci Copper mine, located in the neighboring Greenlee County. Tourists are afforded the chance to visit one of the world’s largest open pit mines during a 2.5 hour tour, overlooking open pit mining operations and learn how millions of pounds of copper are extracted from raw ore each day.

Patrons are afforded a glimpse into the area’s vibrant history through an excellent collection of artifacts and displays. Features include a pioneer home exhibit, Native American Indian displays, the Prehistory Room, the Farm and Ranch Room. The Museum is housed within the historic Thatcher School building in Thatcher.

Eastern Arizona College’s Discovery Park Campus- Gov Aker Observatory- conducts weekend tours of the Mount Graham International Observatory. Weather permitting, the tours begin in mid-May and go through mid-November. Because permits are required to enter the endangered red squirrel refugium, advance reservations are required. The tour features a trip up scenic Mount Graham, focusing on the mountain’s rich geology, history, and diversity of life; a lunch near the summit of the mountain; and a guided tour of the observatory facility. And, yes, Billy the Kid also walked the mountain paths back in the 1870’s.

The motor tour guide will take you along Swift Trail from the base of the mountain to southeastern Arizona’s highest “sky Island” – the Pinaleńos (Mt. Graham). The drive will offer you spectacular scenery from the desert floor to a lush green mountain forest. It’s like driving from Mexico to Canada in an hour and a half. Due to its scenic beauty, Highway 366 was designated a state scenic parkway in 1993.

This rugged 21-mile stretch of unpaved roadway is located between Safford and Clifton, with easy access via U.S.191. The Black Hills Byway, which represents the northern end of the Peloncillo Mountains, is a historic and cultural route with great opportunities for everyone to enjoy.
