Miles of rivers and streams plus numerous lakes and ponds provide excellent riparian habitat. Less than 100 miles north of the international border with Sonora, Mexico, the area attracts many Neotropical migratory birds from Central and South America.

At Eastern Arizona College Ardent avocational archaeologists Jack and Vera Mills conducted extensive excavations on archaeological sites in Southeast Arizona from the 1940s through the 1970s. The Mills Collection, containing artifacts from several periods, particularly the Salado Period (1250 A.D. to 1450 A.D.) is an extensive display of the culture and lifestyle of the people who inhabited this region long ago. Hohokum, Mogollon, Kayenta, and Salado cultures are all represented in these extensive assemblages.

Eastern Arizona College’s Discovery Park Campus- Gov Aker Observatory- conducts weekend tours of the Mount Graham International Observatory. Weather permitting, the tours begin in mid-May and go through mid-November. Because permits are required to enter the endangered red squirrel refugium, advance reservations are required. The tour features a trip up scenic Mount Graham, focusing on the mountain’s rich geology, history, and diversity of life; a lunch near the summit of the mountain; and a guided tour of the observatory facility. And, yes, Billy the Kid also walked the mountain paths back in the 1870’s.
