Camping in Coronado National Forest

Coronado National Forest

The Coronado National Forest covers 1,780,000 acres of southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. Elevations range from 3000 feet to 10,720 feet in twelve widely scattered mountain ranges or "sky islands" that rise dramatically from the desert floor, supporting plant communities as biologically diverse as those encountered on a trip from Mexico to Canada.

In 1933, the Civilian Conservation Corps built the Swift Trail (AZ 366) to ease access. Later they built the visitor center to house the firefighters and forest workers, and to provide a center for information about area attractions. Today, there is a bookstore which provides all kinds of books, maps and educational gifts.

Stockton Pass was named after “Old Man Stockton”, a rancher who settled in this area in the 1870’s. Stockton was the father of the Clanton Brothers, who were involved in the famous gunfight at the OK Corral in Tombstone. Stockton Pass serves as a travel way over the Pinaleños into Sulphur Springs Valley. The Stockton Pass Campground is located right at the apex of the pass and offers good views of the south slopes of some of the mountain range’s highest peaks, as well as views of Sulphur Springs Valley and the Galiuro and Santa Catalina mountains to the west.

Stockton Pass Campground is located 29 miles southwest of Safford.
